Unfortunately, despite the support that people with mental health problems need, having a mental illness is surrounded by stigma. Stigma is a negative term and is closely linked with prejudice and discrimination against certain people.
There has always been a stigma attached to mental health problems. meaning that people feel uncomfortable or afraid to talk about them. Talking about your feelings is seen as taboo in many homes and workplaces. yet this attitude is detrimental to health.
Furthermore, the fear of stigma can often make the situation worse and cause the person more stress if they are trying to hide their feelings or avoid talking about their condition in fear of what other people will think.
Many people say that being discriminated against in work and social situations can be a bigger burden than the illiness itself. This feeling can leave people isolated, excluded and reluctant to seek help.
